EU Special Envoy and Delegation Meet with the Minister of Information and Culture
On Wednesday, 22 Rabi’ al-Thani 1447 AH, the European Union’s Special Envoy, Mr. Gilles Bertrand, along with his accompanying delegation, met with the Minister of Information and Culture, Sheikh Shir Ahmad Haqqani, at the ministry office.
At the beginning of the meeting, Mr. Bertrand stated that this was his first visit to Afghanistan in his capacity as the EU Special Envoy and expressed his hope to achieve tangible improvements during his mission.
He discussed the current situation of media outlets and journalists in Afghanistan, highlighting the importance of their development. Mr. Bertrand reaffirmed the European Union’s support for Afghanistan’s historical heritage and mentioned related EU-funded projects in preservation, education, and healthcare.
Minister Haqqani warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed appreciation for the EU’s cooperation. He stated that the Ministry of Information and Culture remains committed to strengthening the media sector and addressing existing challenges, considering it a core responsibility of the ministry. Under the guidance of Islamic values and policies, the ministry is granting journalists their rights. Since the reestablishment of the Islamic Emirate, around 180 new media outlets and institutions have been officially licensed to operate. Moreover, journalists’ safety and security have been ensured.
Minister Haqqani further emphasized that historical monuments are a shared national treasure. Significant efforts have been made in their preservation and restoration, with more steps planned for the future. He urged continued cooperation between the European Union and other organizations to ensure the professional and sustainable preservation of Afghanistan’s cultural heritage.
