The Ministry of Information and Culture’s Department of Archaeology has identified and documented 30 ancient and historic sites in Paktia Province. The sites comprise 28 ancient settlements and two historic monuments spread across nine districts and Gardez, the provincial capital.

Sayed Zabihullah Sadat, Director of Archaeology, said the survey had also uncovered several archaeological artefacts, including pottery fragments and copper coins dating from the Kushan period.

Among the coins recovered were examples from the reign of Huvishka, the fifth ruler of the Kushan dynasty. Other artefacts also point to the Kushan and Islamic periods. Further specialist research will be needed to establish the precise dates and historical periods of the newly documented sites.

During the survey, the archaeological team also held awareness meetings with local residents and relevant officials. Participants were briefed on the importance of protecting the country’s ancient sites and cultural heritage, as well as the contents and significance of Leadership Decree No. 1 (may Allah preserve him), which addresses their preservation.
