Govt.’s Support Led to Afghanistan’s Membership of Global Press Freedom Coalition: Minister Safi

Acting Minister of Information and Culture, Hasina Safi in an interview with VOA said yesterday that there was major reduction in violence against journalists in 2019, adding that government investigated and addressed most of the cases of violence against Afghan journalists, BNA reported. “The government has investigated 105 cases of violence against journalists in 2019 and addressed most of the cases,” the minister told VOA. NAI that supports free media in Afghanistan has also said 115 cases of violence against journalists were registered in 2019 that shows 42 percent reduction comparing to previous years. Hinting to problems of female journalists in the country, the acting minister of information and culture said there were 1600 female journalists working for different media in the country, adding 700 of which were professional journalists. The acting minister assured the ministry’s full support for freedom of press and expression in the country, adding the joint committee of media and government and the safety committee were also helping the affairs. The minister also said that the law of access to information had earlier been approved and the mass media procedures have also been prepared.
