The second and final day of the Kabul Book Festival, organized by the Directorate of Public Libraries under the Deputy Ministry of Arts and Culture in Kabul. The event aimed to emphasize the significance of reading and foster a culture of literacy and intellectual engagement nationally.
The closing ceremony was attended by Alhaj Mawlawi Khairullah Khairkhwa, Minister of Information and Culture; Mawlawi Mohammad Younus Rashid, Deputy Minister for Youth Affairs; Ms. Roza Otunbayeva, UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative and Head of UNAMA; alongside ambassadors, representatives from local and international organizations, senior officials, notable writers, members of publishing associations, and many youths and children.
In his speech, Minister Khairkhwa highlighted that reading is essential for intellectual development and mental clarity. He urged society to work together to promote reading habits, increase awareness, and safeguard future generations from ignorance.
The minister reaffirmed the ministry’s dedication to fostering a reading culture nationwide by developing public libraries, encouraging youth and children to read, supporting writers and publishers, and improving access to quality educational materials.
He announced upcoming provincial incentive programs aimed at raising awareness about the importance of reading. Additionally, he called on international organizations to collaborate further with the ministry, especially in cultural and educational initiatives.
Deputy Minister Rashid emphasized that access to knowledge through reading is crucial for intellectual and academic advancement. He urged international bodies to focus on Afghanistan’s cultural and educational needs and support the creation and enhancement of libraries in remote and underserved areas.
At the event’s conclusion, the minister and officials distributed gifts to orphans and underprivileged children present.
Furthermore, the Directorate of Public Libraries will host a one-day book exhibition this Thursday (26 Saratan 1404 SH) in Kabul’s Dasht-e-Barchi area.
