Deputy Minister Visits Cemetery of Afghan Martyrs of the Second Anglo-Afghan War in Kandahar
Sheikh Abdul Rahman Tayebi, Deputy Minister for Arts and Culture at the Ministry of Information and Culture, visited the cemetery of Afghan martyrs of the Second Anglo-Afghan War in the Anzargi area of Takhta Pul District, Kandahar Province. The visit took place during his official trip to the province, accompanied by Engineer Mohammad Hasib Nasimi, Director of the Department for the Preservation of Historical Monuments.
During the visit, the condition of the cemetery was assessed, and the need to preserve and maintain the site was emphasised. The cemetery is part of Afghanistan’s historical heritage and bears witness to the sacrifices and struggles of Afghans in defence of their independence and freedom.
Before the Islamic Emirate came to power, some opportunists and traffickers in historical artefacts reportedly carried out unauthorised excavations at the site in search of buried treasures, damaging the sanctity and historical value of these burial grounds.
Sheikh Abdul Rahman Tayebi said the Ministry would take the necessary steps to restore and repair the cemetery in honour of the martyrs of the Second Anglo-Afghan War and to protect the country’s historical heritage.
He described the preservation and maintenance of historical sites as one of the Ministry’s key responsibilities, stressing the importance of safeguarding such places as part of Afghanistan’s historical, cultural and national identity.
